American Privilege

I wrote an article yesterday that seems to be really popular (and possibly controversial?) It's called "American privilege". One of the members of the group [info]ontd_feminism linked it and it received more than 400 comments in less than a day.

Here's the original (posted at Abagond's blog): American Privilege (original)

And here is [info]ontd_feminism  discussion: American Privilege (linked) + comments

The reason I'm writing this (here, on my abandoned blog) is because I'm not a member of said group and I am unable to answer any of the questions or comments posted in the group (and there are many!)

So if somebody in charge with the group read this, please give me the opportunity to comment.

Also, if somebody interested in the subject is here, she or he may leave a comment or ask questions.

Great thanks to everybody who posted their comments. They are much appreciated.

Mira

American privilege

This is a guest post by commenter Mira from Serbia. She does not hate the USA, especially not its people, but she does think it is unfair for any one culture to have most of the power and use it on others.

American privilege is not what many Americans often think it is. It is not about living in a great place full of opportunities and freedom instead of a horrible swamp. What is important to understand is that America, the USA, did not earn the good things it has through honest, hard work: specific historical conditions made the USA rich and powerful. It uses that power to work for its interests.

So having American privilege means being on the stronger side of the power struggle. (Read more)

Writer's Block: Trading Spaces

If you could be another person for a day, who would it be and why?

Now, I hate these "writer's block" things, but for some reason I want to give this one a chance :P Not that I have anything smart or interesting or original to say. But hey, it's 2:51 AM here, and I am an insomniac.

So, let's write.
-----------------------------------------
In short, I don't want to be another person.

But!- it would be nice to have more money, at least for 24 hours. I could travel. 24h is not much, but perhaps I could buy a nice vacation during those 24 hours and use it later. I could visit Greece and Australia. It would be really really great not to worry about the money, but hey, money isn't everything. Perhaps it's nothing. But I'm one of those people who worry all the time :P
-----------------------------------------
Okay, it wasn't about trading spaces at all.

PS- Off topic, but Neil Young has a new album for us.

Harry Potter- Deathly Hallows

Just read Deathly Hallows. I really hate all the fuss going around that book, but I am a fan since the first book, so I just had to read it. Again, I really don't like all the things that go with the last Potter installment: book leak, the merchandise, hysteria, films, action figures and even (plastic surgerised?) J.K.Rowling.

-Spoilers ahead-
(but everybody who cares know everything about the book anyway)

But still, HP books are like no others, and I loved this one. A good way to end the series, I think. Far from being perfect, but still, much better than 5th and 6th, which had no plot at all. Really, am I the only one who can't find a plot inside that huge 5th book? The only thing that was really important was Sirius' death. The 6th was better, but without a good plot.

Now, we have something better in the book 7, but maybe too much stuff for one book. What I'm saying is, some of the stuff could fit into book 5 and 6. That way, 1)Those books could have more of a plot and 2)Some things would fit better into the book 7 (Snitch and flesh memory, the stone, the ring or similar stuff).

But in any case, book 7 was good. I loved the tale of three brothers, I loved Dumbledore's story, I loved Snape's story. Hey, I love Snape, I've always loved him, he's my favourite character. Too bad we didn't see much of him in the book. I loved Hogwarts battles, and the part when Harry's facing his destiny.

I didn't like the fact that there were waaay much things for one book, especially things that were not mentioned before (and should have been), and somewhat slow and empty parts of Horcrux search. The most awaited moment, Ron and Herimoine's kiss was just placed in a stupid moment. There were more appropriate moments for it (in the woods, for example). Harry is a horcrux thing didn't seem as important as I thought it would be (perhaps because so many of us guessed it?) Also, I wanted Harry and Snape to meet again (King's Cross perhaps), but maybe it's because I wanted more Snape anyway. I didn't like the fact that there wasn't much of Hogwarts- I love Hogwarts and there's no HP story without it. Epilogue was ripped from a fan fiction, I'm telling ya.

But, in overall, good HP book, one of the best. Not perfect, but, a good one.

What I got right:
-Snape being a good guy
-Harry is a horcrux
-Couples (but it was obvious, I wanted Harry to be with Luna, but Rowling didn't)
-Snape's death :(
-Death of a Weasley (but I didn't get the right one) and Lupin
-Harry will communicate with Dumbledore and his parents
-Neville Herbology teacher

What I didn't expect, but was good:
-Dumbledore's past
-Hallows
-Each horcrux destroyed by another person
-Dudely remorse

What I didn't expect, but was bad:
-FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!! :(
-Hedwig!!!
-Tonks
-Tooo many things for one book
-Lots of loose ends
-Crappy epilogue

Happy birthday, Chip and Dale!

(BTW, I am still alive. And I WILL update my journal... I will... :p)

Anyway, today is Chip's birthday. But that's not all! Guess what? Today is Dale's brithday!
(Well, they're twins, so it's logical :D)

Chip and Dale are my little hamsters... Well, not so little anymore! They are one year old!

Chip and Dale are unique! They were only pups (Ellie had only two babies, imagine that!), and they're both male (usually, there are more female than male pups, so this is really interesting).

Unfortunatelly, poor Chip is very sick. The little one has a tumor and a bad ear infection. :( I have to stop now, or I'll cry all night.

Anyways, just wanted to let you know about my birthday hammies!

I really want to keep this journal alive, but then again, there's a big question- what to write? I don't like to talk about personal life and I don't like to post random stuf either.
But I promise, I'll try to post as often as possible. :)

This poor hamster was sent through the post by two assholes (Cmbridge students). Luckily, he was unharmed and how is named First Class.

Read article here: Hamster found in a postbox
... and here: Drunken students posted hamster

I am so ashamed of being a human sometimes.

So people, kiss your pets today and love them and take care of them every day.
I know I'll kiss my Bella and Vito and tell them about the Firs Class case :p

RIP, Sam!

Sam, my dear hamster, died last night.
He was almost 3 years old (he was born on October 5th, 2002 and I was holping that he would make it to his third birthday, but...)
... But he was really old and died withoutn any suffering.
I am sad.
Though I know that he was really old and that he had a long and, hopefuly happy life.
